What Makes an Interstate Move Different?
Moving from one state to another is very different from shifting across town. Goods spend longer in transit, they may be handled more than once, and the destination can have completely different building rules, weather and access conditions. Planning both ends of the journey is as important as the journey itself.
Long-distance moves also tend to involve more paperwork. Keeping a clear record of the agreed scope, your inventory and payments protects you if questions come up later — for example, during a company reimbursement claim.
How to Plan an Interstate Relocation
1. Decide What Is Worth Moving
Transport cost on long routes is influenced by volume. Sell, donate or discard items you no longer need, especially old furniture and bulky appliances that may be cheaper to replace at the destination.
2. Prepare a Detailed Inventory
List major furniture, appliances and the approximate number of cartons. Note fragile items, high-value goods and anything with special handling needs. A written inventory helps when goods are unloaded at the new home.
3. Confirm Access at Both Addresses
Check floor levels, lift sizes, staircase access, parking and society rules at both properties. Some buildings need permission letters or have fixed shifting hours.
4. Agree on a Realistic Schedule
Discuss the pickup date and a delivery window that reflects the distance and route. Plan your own travel so that someone is available to receive goods at the destination.
Suggested Interstate Moving Timeline

Confirm scope and dates in writing. Inform societies at both ends.
1 Week Before
Pack non-essentials, update address records and arrange utilities at the new home.
Moving Day
Keep essentials with you, check every room and keep copies of documents.
Documents to Keep for an Interstate Move
- Quotation or estimate with the agreed scope
- Inventory of goods, ideally signed at pickup and delivery
- Written communication about dates and services
- Payment records
- Final invoice issued after the actual service
Rules about transport documents and e-way bills depend on the nature and value of the goods and current GST regulations. Ask the service provider and refer to official guidance where needed. See our packers and movers bill guide for more on invoices.
Common Interstate Routes
Customers often ask about moves such as Pune to Bangalore, Pune to Hyderabad, Mumbai to Delhi NCR, Bangalore to Chennai and Lucknow to Pune. Every route has its own distance and conditions, so share full addresses rather than just city names. You can also read our city guides:
